Beringer continues our fine run on the Flat
Our last four runners on the Flat have yielded three winners, including Newbury Spring Cup winner Chatez and a Craven meeting duo – Aweedram and Beringer – who were our only two runners at Newmarket this week.
Beringer has improved almost two stone in the ratings since he underwent a wind operation, and, having run so well to grab a share of third place in the Lincoln at Doncaster, he came good in some style at Headquarters, holding on bravely in a tight finish.
Twice last season Beringer was placed on the July Course, but Andrea Atzeni gave him a cracking ride on the Rowley Mile on Thursday to make it third time lucky.
Interference might have cost Beringer second place in the Lincoln, but we now know that he is equally effective at the mile or a mile and a quarter, which increases our options, and Alan said that both Royal Ascot and York, where he was second to the smart Wissahickon last year, would both be considered.
On the Flat tomorrow, like Aweedram, Hummdinger has his first run in a handicap at Nottingham in the evening, while earlier in the day Fibonacci runs in the once prestigious Queen’s Prize at Kempton.
Fibonacci has had three runs over hurdles for us, but he has some decent form on the Flat on his CV, having finished third in a hot race on this polytrack surface at Chelmsford last year, after which he won twice and also boasted a brace of seconds in his one season on Gallic shores.
Reverting to the jumps we have Mahlermade, who has been a model of consistency all winter, but who only got as far at the fourth at Uttoxeter last time, looking for an overdue success at Haydock in the big staying handicap chase, in which we also run Salmanazar, who kept on well to take the bronze medal at Newbury last month.
And Ziga Boy will be joining them on the journey up the M6. Since returning from injury this season he has been disappointing in two runs, but the handicapper has dropped him 7lb and if he could reproduce his form from the Skybet success at Doncaster two years ago he would have a definite chance.
