Busy week-end ahead but horses could not be in better form
Arguably, the first “proper” meeting of the jumps season takes place at Chepstow tomorrow, while we are also three-handed in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket, where we are all dreaming of another Grumeti-type surprise? in the second leg of the Autumn Double.
And the Barbury team could not be in better form, with Fidux (Southwell) and Caspar the Cub (Kempton) winning on Wednesday and Mystical Clouds weighing in with an easy victory up at Bangor yesterday.
Caspar the Club seems to like the all-weather, but after four places on the surface this was his first success and he looked the winner from the home turn. This will have done his confidence the world of good and here’s hoping the handicapper does not hit him too hard.
The official assessor finally gave Fidux a bit of slack – he won his first two races over hurdles but the handicapper “did not miss him” and until Southwell he had failed to win in 10 attempts – so, hopefully, he, too, can build on this success.
And owner Trevor Hemmings is a big supporter of Bangor, so he will have been delighted to see his promising youngster Mystical Clouds win with with such authority on the North Wales track, with Wayne Hutchinson enthusing afterwards “we were getting 21lb from our market-rival (Global Jackpot) so it made sense to be positive with the riding tactics, and as it was our fellow’s first run of the season you would like to think that he will improve on that.”
