Fourth time lucky for Top Tug?
Top Tug runs in his fourth Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot tomorrow, having finished fourth, fifth and seventh in the last three runnings.
He will start at big odds but surely represents excellent each-way value as he showed plenty of his old fire when finishing fourth to Tuesday’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Crystal Ocean on his seasonal debut in a G3 at Newbury last month.
One would think that low numbers (inside stalls) have the advantage in a maximum field around Ascot’s mile and a half, but the statistics say otherwise, and single figure draws have struggled to avoid the bunching in recent years.
Top Tug’s best run was his fourth two years ago, and that day he started from stall 17. He is in the same stall on Friday, so here’s hoping he can finish in the money again.
