Cosmeapolitan ran a blinder to finish second on the Flat at Lingfield on Saturday, but it is the Cheltenham Festival that commands most of the chit-chat around Barbury just now and Sceau Royal did what we all hoped he would when sailing through his prep-race for the Arkle in style at Doncaster.

“Pleased and relieved,” was Alan’s immediate reaction on Town Moor. “It was a Grade 2 novice chase, but Sceau Royal was odds-on, so anything but a win would have been disappointing.

“It was a good test and they went a proper gallop, but this was the logical place to come and the timing was perfect as it is a long time from Sandown in early December through to Cheltenham on March 13.

“He’s had a nice break since the Henry Vlll and I’ve left a bit to work so, so you would hope that there is some more improvement to come, and the better the ground on the opening day of the Festival the happier I’ll be. We’ll keep him fresh for Cheltenham now.”
