With his Flat team having grown to around 50, which include 17 two-year-olds after a few visits to the Breeze-Up sales in the spring, Alan has already gone through the £100,000 mark on the level, but his small squad of summer jumpers are also doing us proud, with Talkischeap and Midnight Cowboy both winning again at Warwick yesterday to take out strike-rate to 40%.

Alan said:”Talkischeap is such a slick jumper and it looked a decent novice hurdle, but we’ll give him a holiday now and bring him back next season, though Midnight Cowboy, who is also in great form, will be kept going.

“Wayne (Hutchinson) timed his challenger perfectly on Midnight Cowboy as he has to be delivered late as he is a horse who pulls up in front. Like most of the Midnight Legend progeny, who we know so well, he loves this fast ground, so we might have a look at either Uttoxeter or Newton Abbot next month as he is slightly better going left-handed.”

We have two runners on the Flat on Saturday, Top Tug at Goodwood and Sir Valentine at Chester, with Fortified Bay looking to have a favourite’s chance over jumps at Ffos Las.

Alan added:”Top Tug made a very pleasing return to the Flat when beating all except what might be a useful Godolphin handicapper in Frontiersman at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting, and the official assessor reckons our fellow produced a career-best there as he went up another 3lb to a mark of 100. It looks a competitive race but he is in super form and he’ll enjoy the ground.

“Sir Valentine has his first run of the year, but he broke his maiden at Kempton last August and also enjoys the quicker ground. He is ready to roll again, though drawn nine out of 10 at Chester is not the best even over the mile and five.”
