Hollie Doyle back on Rainbow Dreamer at Sandown tonight
Hollie Doyle has been aboard for four of Rainbow Dreamer‘s Flat race victories, so here’s hoping that racing’s greatest lady jockey on the level can work a bit more magic when they team up again for the Group 3 Henry 11 Stakes at Sandown this evening.
Rainbow Dreamer is an all-weather specialist – he has earned more than twice as much prize money from his six wins on the artificial surface than he did from two successes on grass – but Hollie, who was also in the saddle when the eight-year-old produced a career-best performance to finish a close up fifth in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last summer, is hopeful that the Barbury veteran, who is the outsider of the five runners, might outrun his odds.
Ante-post favourite for last year’s All Weather Marathon Championship, which had to be cancelled because of the pandemic, Rainbow Dreamer was also market-leader for the big Polytrack staying race at Lingfield on Good Friday this year.
However, nothing went right for Rainbow Dreamer, the two-miler being a stop-start affair, and, though Martin Harley attempted to take the sting out of the opposition with an early charge for home at the three-furlong pole, not surprisingly his mount tired in the straight and got swallowed up, eventually finishing fourth.
Rainbow Dreamer then found red-hot Coronation Cup favourite Al Aasi and company too hot to handle in the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury, where the trip would have been on the sharp side, but back up in distance and with a stiff uphill finish, Hollie is hoping for a strong pace to bring out Rainbow Dreamer’s endless stamina. He might be a superstar on the all-weather, but he is no slouch on turf.
