Daiquiri Bay wins his Chester maiden like an above-average performer
May 7
Alan has several potentially exciting three-year-olds for this Flat season, and, following hard on the heels of Kurakka‘s impressive win at Chelmsford last week, Daiquiri Bay looked another bright prospect for the future when easily winning the 10-furlong maiden on the opening day of Chester’s big May meeting.
Having shown plenty of promise when an eye-catching third on his debut at Newbury last back-end, Daiquiri Bay bolted up second time out in what looked a decent novice race on the Roodee.
Moving on to the heels of the leaders on the home turn, Daiquiri Bay (11-4) quickened up in fine style once Tom Marquand asked the question, and he quickly stretched clear to win by five lengths.
Marquand was bubbling with enthusiasm afterwards. He said:”That was really impressive. This was very much a learning curve for Daiquiri Bay, and it did not help being stuck on the inside rails, especially as it was his first time going around a bend
“But once he stepped out into daylight he moved up through the gears, and he ought to come on a lot for that. Alan told me that Daiquiri Bay was a nice horse but that he had barely been able to get any of his horses on the grass during this dry spell, so we did not really know what to expect.”
Daiquiri Bay, who cost 62,000gs at last year’s Breeze-Up Sale at the Guineas meeting, is a good looking son of New Bay, whose progeny include Bay Bridge, hero of the 2022 Champion Stakes, and recent Earl of Sefton Stakes winner Persica. Exciting times ahead? Definitely.
