Travelling Head Lad

Mark was appointed as First Travelling Head last November (2017) and has filled the role extremely well. He was thrown straight in the deep end joining us at a peak stage of the 2017/18 National Hunt season. He has proved beneficial to me and all my staff, where his experience and knowledge reflects on all my younger members of staff which helps them develop in their role. He is very helpful when taking them racing and is always willing to answer their questions.

Mark has a precious and valuable background in racing where his career began at Mr Tommy Carberry’s, being appointed as amateur jockey from 1982-1987, riding 17 winners in his time there. His career notably blossomed where his next chapter was a move to Mr David Nicholson’s, starting out as Stable Lad working his way up to Head Lad in a spell that spanned over 20 years. He worked alongside some star names, most notably Relkeel in which he particularly has fond memories with, when winning back-to-back Bula Hurdles at Cheltenham in the late 90’s. After leaving the Duke he started up with Tom Symonds when he began his training career in 2010, acting as Head Lad for six years.
