Daiquiri Bays might be the toast after the Old Borough Cup at Haydock on Saturday
September 4
Pompette will be our first runner in September when he contests the maiden at Ascot on Friday, and, while he jumps up a grade from his debut fifth at Ffos Las, he looks an interesting runner.
A 65,000gns purchase and carrying the colours of Susannah Ricci, whose husband Rich Ricci has had so much success with his jump horses, Pompette ran an eye-catching race first time out.
Looking green early on, Pompette began to get the hang of things entering the final furlong and finished a close up fifth in a race which got a form boost when the winner, Oceans Four, was subsequently only beaten a nose in the G3 Solario Stakes at Sandown.
The Barbury horsebox will also be heading to Ascot on Saturday, with Daiquiri Bay, who produced a career-best performance when finishing third in the Melrose Handicap at last month’s York Ebor meeting, looking to have a solid chance of getting in the money in another Heritage Handicap on the Royal Heath.
Loughville has a somewhat longer journey on Saturday, as she heads up the M6 for the competitive Old Borough Cup at Haydock. She ran below par in her last two races, but she was too keen both times and if she switches off like she did when finishing third in a Listed handicap at Goodwood in early May, Loughville could well outrun her odds.
Wisper has run some good races on the all-weather, though she is still 0-10 on an artificial surface, so we’ll be hoping for better luck when Rossa Ryan rides the seven-times turf winner again in the mile and a half handicap at Kempton.
Finally, Finest View, who has done us proud over fences this summer, winning three races and finishing second in the other two, carries top weight in the two miles and one handicap chase at Stratford. Much will depend as to whether the rain stays away as Finest View loves to hear her hooves rattle, but Sunday is forecast to be much the wettest of the days this week-end, so fingers crossed she’ll give Tom Cannon another great ride.
