Cambridgeshire option open to Alcarath
An appearance in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket later this month could be on the agenda for Alcarath following his solid effort in defeat at Sandown Park on Saturday.
The son of Acclamation filled the runner-up spot over a mile and a quarter for the second race in succession at the Esher venue after finishing second behind Kokbastau in the Zyn Frontrunner Finish Handicap.
And on that back of that run Alan is now considering dropping the four year old back down to nine furlongs for a tilt at the prestigious Heritage Handicap on the Rowley Mile on September 26th.
Alan said: “He got to the front, but he was just caught close to the line by an improving three-year-old of Roger’s (Varian). He hadn’t run for sometime, but we had been waiting for that slower ground. It might just sharpen him up a little bit.
“We might look at the Cambridgeshire with him as a race like that could suit him, but I need to discuss it with his owners so we will see.”
Meanwhile over at Windsor on the same day respectable efforts were also posted by Wolf Bay, who finished second in the Matchbook Betting Exchange Supporting UK Racing Novice Stakes, and La Cosmos, who finished third on her turf debut in the Bet £20 Get £40 In Free Bets At matchbook.com Handicap.
Alan added: “Wolf Bay might have been slightly flattered as only two or three of them stayed on the stands side, but it was still a big step forward.
“He has been given quite a high mark of seventy eight, but he will probably go down the nursery route now where will probably step him up to seven furlongs.
“It was the first time on turf for La Cosmos and I was pleased with her. She seemed to love the ground. She will have learnt plenty from that run and we should have plenty of fun with her.”
On Sunday it was the turn of Blazeon Five to take to the track to contest the City Of Chichester Handicap at Goodwood. And while things failed to go to plan, all roads will now lead to the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket on October 10th, where she will be joined by Believitanducan.
Alan said: “It got very tacky at Goodwood as the ground started to dry a bit. She never really travelled. I think looking at the race you had to be handy as the first three were the first three throughout. They weren’t really coming from the back.
“She had a good blow as she hadn’t run for some time. That will hopefully tee her up for the Cesarewitch now. I would have thought that Believitanducan will be going there as well.”
Runners from the yard will be thin on the ground for the much of this week, however I’d Go Maniac will bid to strike gold for the second race running under Alan’s daughter Georgia when making the trip to Haydock Park to contest the 100% Racing TV Profits Back To Racing Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap.
Alan added: “We are pretty quiet this week and we have no entries at the weekend. I’d Go Maniac will take his chance up at Haydock Park, but it could be a bit soft for him, and I’m not sure he will handle the ground.
“There is a lot of rain to come again, and it is already soft, so it could be quite testing by Thursday.”
