Drop back in trip should suit Westerton at Doncaster

Westerton has looked a smart performer over 10 furlongs this season, so dropping back to his favoured trip at the opening stage of Doncaster’s St Leger meeting on Thursday ought to suit him well.

Ryan Moore has struck up a good association with Westerton, and, though the ground rode fast when they teamed up successfully at Sandown in June, this progressive three-year-old also has solid form in the soft.

Town Moor are expecting more rain, but we should not get the impression that it was the ground which beat him at Glorious Goodwood last time.

Westerton was stepping up to a mile and a half and looks the type who will appreciate that trip, but the consensus opinion on the Sussex Downs that day was that the going was closer to heavy than soft, and the testing ground took its toll up the straight.

That was the only time that Westerton has finished out of the first three this season in five races, and in what looks an open race he heads up the A1 with sound prospects of maintaining the good start which Barbury have enjoyed to September.
